Project Type: New Construction
161 Drake Road on Salt Spring Island is a BC Housing-owned facility providing 36 homes: 32 supportive units for adults experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and four affordable rental homes for lower-income earners who can live independently. The supportive homes include studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, each with a private bathroom and kitchenette, with on-site staff available 24/7 to provide services including meals, laundry, and health and wellness supports. The building, first announced in 2022, opened in fall 2025 and is operated by Lookout Housing and Health Society. The four-storey modular wood-frame building was constructed by Muchalat Construction Ltd. and designed to meet BC Housing Construction Standards and National Housing Strategy accessibility requirements.
Muir Engineering provided full electrical consulting services for the project, including power distribution design with whole-building metering, fire alarm and life safety systems, suite and common area lighting to ASHRAE standards, EV charging provisions, and a comprehensive low voltage package covering access control, enterphone, cameras, and network infrastructure. Integrated Systems Testing in compliance with CAN/ULC-S1001 was also completed by Muir Engineering, supporting the building's path to occupancy.
